SS-31 (Elamipretide)

Description

SS-31 (elamipretide) is a mitochondria-targeting tetrapeptide designed to concentrate at the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds cardiolipin – a phospholipid essential to the machinery that produces cellular energy. It belongs to the Szeto-Schiller peptide class studied for mitochondrial function.

Mechanistic research describes SS-31 as stabilizing cardiolipin to preserve electron-transport efficiency and ATP synthesis while reducing the leakage of reactive oxygen species, with reported anti-inflammatory activity, examined in preclinical models of mitochondrial dysfunction, ischemia and oxidative stress.
